A topless coffee shop may sound like a fun business idea, but is it really the smartest plan when you are hoping to attract customers? There have been topless coffee shops popping up all over the nation in the past few years, including one in Maine that burnt down as a result of possible arson. Many small-business owners are catching on to this idea, which is what makes topless coffee shops the idea of the new millennium.
Apparently, employees are also very eager to work at these venues because when that same coffee shop in Maine opened up (before the fire), they had over 150 applicants! They only had 10 positions available for coffee servers, but everyone was fighting for a position. Many of the applicants wanted the job because it was something different, and they also had prior coffee shop experience. Some of the applicants stated that they did not find it at all degrading to women, but instead empowering because they had the opportunity to work in a different environment serving something that they loved.
The topless coffee shop in Maine was only for people over 18, of course, and you could not bring any cameras in. It also was a cash only bar, similar to what you would find in many a strip club. To be fair, there also was a topless man on hand to serve coffee as well. The only issue with this Maine coffee shop was that many of the local residents were not happy with it, though it was approved by the town planning board. The natives of the town were afraid that it would attract a lower class clientele, but others did hope that this new business idea would bring some life back to the city’s slow economy. This again raises the question as to whether or not topless coffee servers are a tacky distraction or a brilliant business idea?
You can only assume that this idea is inspired by the recession, which is the reason that someone would think that it is necessary to have topless servers for three dollar cups of coffee. However, if it is bringing them business, then they are probably on the right track. This town in Maine, Vassalboro, does have a high unemployment rate, so they were hoping that this business would revive their stagnant economy.
The only issue I can think of is the potential danger in a topless coffee shop, which is the fact that you are working with hot and steaming liquids without any type of clothing to protect yourself. I have seen so many waiters and waitresses spill hot coffee on themselves, so hopefully this company has a great insurance policy for any type of Workman’s Comp needed from third-degree burns to the chest.
But does the buck stop here? Perhaps other businesses will start providing topless services, like dry cleaning or dog grooming. This seems to be a unique idea that someone thought of to gain attention and income during this economic crisis, resulting in a topless coffee shop!
